GRANDPARENT NAPPING My father told me a horrible thing today. He was walking, shuffling more likely, into the tiny village he lives near, age 88. A big black car pulled up along side him on the empty block. A man rolled down the window and said, "Oh, my father sends his best and would love to see you!" Dad tottered over to the car and said, "Oh, good, who is your father?" The man got out and opened the back door and said, "Come on, we’ll take you to see him." Some instinct made Dad say "no" and the man grabbed his arm to pull him into the car. Dad somehow pulled away and got to the sidewalk where he called to someone he knew. Dad being a life-long fixture is known by everyone in the village. The black car sped off. He was being kidnapped or grandparent-napped. For nights, I kept envisioning the phone calls, as he would have been held captive- absolutely vulnerable, like a child. The need to protect him was huge in me, equal to protecting a child. By Tina |
