AGA, PART II
At the end of her life, Aga faced her first reversal. Her husband Freddie lost his eyesight at age 90 and his life at 92. He left his will entailing his entire estate to Aga. But he was English and a technicality did not allow him to leave the estate outside England so it was confiscated and Aga at age 89 had nothing. Aga’s magic needed money. Instead of her glorious apartment on Ave Foch in Paris and a country house in Normandy, she now had only one room in the 16e. She who thrived on parties was alone and impoverished in her old age. I knew nothing of this when I went to see her. She still sparkled but her sparkle was forced. She was one of those rare persons who had lived out her dreams and not gotten lost in everyday affairs. But now she needed to live in everyday details – food, shelter, were what she needed, not caviar and champagne. Of course, I rallied and helped her. I alerted her friends of her peril and they rallied. But she chose to die, to say good bye. I could not say good bye to her. Maybe there are some people you just can’t say good bye to.
